Supersession began in 1970 and for a time was New Zealand's biggest surfboard maker.
The label finds favour today for the same reasons it did back then; fine craftsmanship, innovative design and the ability to produce a board that suits its rider. This is not a label content to settle for the status quo.
As one of New Zealand's more experienced surfboard craftsman, I've been surfing for over 35 years and shaping for 30 years. I'm constantly refining construction methods and designs and have been at the forefront of the move towards wood veneer and epoxy laminates.
Over the years I've learnt from and employed many excellent craftsmen for the various processes involved in making a board, but I've always maintained an ability to take a board from start to finish. With the recent move from Supersession's former premises in Barry's Point Road, Takapuna, to a personalised, purpose built factory just 15 minutes from Te Arai Point, I've gone a full circle. I'm back to building boards the way I started. I'm shaping, laminating, sanding and finishing. It's a real joy to work this way as I feel that by working on a board through each process I am able to pay close attention to detail, achieving a finely tuned board.
Supersession has become well recognised for the 'shortboards over seven feet' that I've been producing, boards for mature surfers looking for ease of paddling while retaining the looseness of the shorter boards they've been riding. The pocket rocket for one, has proven incredibly successful.
I'm currently test-riding a 7'4" bonza, and a 6'8" wider conventional shortboard which keeps me in touch with the latest shortboard designs I'm shaping for the team riders and young guns.
I believe different surfing styles, waves and bodies dictate that what we each ride should also be different. That's the basis of the Supersession philosophy, and in our showroom you'll see the diverse range of board styles that are proving popular with our customers.
Of course, I'm always keen to incorporate your own ideas or features of an old board that has worked well for you in order to help maximise your surfing fun.
